Enter the most prestigious design competition for interactive media, the Communication Arts Interactive Competition. Any interactive project created for digital distribution on disc, interactive kiosk, handheld device, online service or the World Wide Web is eligible. Selected by a nationally representative panel of distinguished programmers, interface designers and creative directors, the winning entries will be distributed worldwide in the Communication Arts Interactive Annual and on commarts.com, assuring important exposure to the creators of this outstanding work.
Each winning entrant will receive a personalized Award of Excellence, milled from solid aluminum.

What to Enter
Any projectinterface design, educational and entertainment programs, interactive product display, applicationcreated for digital distribution on disc, interactive kiosk, handheld device, online service or the World Wide Web is eligible. There is no eligibility period due to the rapidly-changing nature of interactive media. Submission of an entry acknowledges the right of Communication Arts to use it for exhibition and publication.
Interactive Competition Categories/Fees
These categories are judged by the Interactive Competition jury and will appear in the Interactive Annual and on commarts.com:
W - Websites/Microsites
Websites used for any purpose (including advertising, news, e-commerce, education and entertainment, etc.) that utilize web browser-based technologies. Disc ($125) URL ($100)
S - Social
Social network applications, extensions and games designed for social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and other social network sites. Disc ($125) URL ($100)
D - Desktop
Apps, widgets, branded experiences and games designed to run locally on a Mac or PC desktop/laptop. Disc ($125) Downloadable App ($125) URL ($100)
M - Mobile
Apps, mobile optimized websites, games and location-aware services designed for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and other smartphones. Disc ($125) Downloadable App ($125) URL ($100)
T - Tablets/Handheld Devices
Apps, games, e-books, magazines, digital publishing and interactive sales presentations designed for iPad, Android, Playbook, Kindle and Nook tablets or other handheld devices besides mobile phones. Disc ($125) Downloadable App ($125) URL ($100)
E - Environmental
Interactive installations, kiosks, tables, in-store/window displays, out-of-home experiences, tradeshow and museum exhibits, corporate showrooms, etc. Disc ($125) URL ($100)
O - Other Interactive Media
Any project not covered in previous categories where interactivity is integral to the user experience. Disc ($125) URL ($100)
Late Fees
Entries must be registered through our online competition system no later than Midnight (Pacific Time Zone), October 4, 2013. Entries registered after that date require a late fee of $10 per entry. No entries can be registered after October 18, 2013.
How to Enter
All competition entries are processed through our online online competition system. Printed Call-for-Entry forms are no longer used.
Entries may be submitted in the following formats:
Disc Entries: Macintosh- or PC-based CD-ROMs or DVD-ROMs. Entries not available in these formats may be submitted as a video demonstration on DVD (viewable on a standard DVD player) in NTSC format or MPEG files on a CD-ROM. Include 4 seconds of black, no slates or bars. Computer-based formats such as QuickTime or Flash should have a maximum screen size of 1024(h) x 768(v). The video must convey the look and feel of the interactive project only and be no longer than five minutes in duration. No campaign overviews please.
Web-Based Entries:
Website URL. All web-based entries must be viewable in a common web browser and accessible via the Internet for three months after the competition deadline. If the entry is not publicly accessible, please include the user name and password to your secured server. Web-based video demonstrations must be a direct link to the project and be no longer than five minutes in duration. No splash page or campaign overviews please.
Downloadable Apps:
Apple App Store or Google Play URL only. All other applications must be submitted as a demonstration video either as a disc or web-based entry.
Preparation of Packages
Address packages to Communication Arts Interactive Annual. Non-United States contestants should mark each package Materials for Contest Entry. No Commercial Value. No provision will be made by CA for US Customs or airport pickup. International entries should be sent by international courier. CA is not responsible for damage or loss of any entry.
Forms and Entry Fees
After choosing a form of payment you will have access to PDF reports summarizing what you entered. If you chose to pay by check, you will have an invoice available for printing. Entries submitted on disc will require you to print, trim and then attach entry forms to the CD-ROM/DVD case, and then ship them to Communication Arts.
Entry fees are $100 (US) per web-based entry and $125 (US) per disc-based entry or downloadable app. Make checks payable to Communication Arts. Non-United States contestants must send an International Money Order or a check in US funds drafted on a US bank. Please include the check with your entries if you are delivering them via mail/courier. If your payment is being sent under a separate cover, please send your entries now, with a note saying that the check is coming under separate cover. If you submit all of your entries online please write the Communication Arts invoice number on the check. The invoice number can be found in the Entry Forms PDF file. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. Charges for your entry fees will appear on your statement as Commarts. Credit card charges can only be done online. We do accept wire transfers, however there is an additional fee of $25 (US) to cover fees charged by the banks to process the transfer. Please contact our office for instructions.

Notification of Acceptance
Only accepted entries will be notified three months after the deadline date. Complete credits, proof of rights clearances and any reproduction materials will be requested at that time. Please note that CA will be unable to publish or exhibit any winning entry that does not provide adequate proof that all necessary rights clearances have been obtained. Award of Excellence certificates for firms, individuals and clients will be mailed one month after the publication date.

Interactive Competition FAQs
What is the eligibility period for the Interactive Competition?
There is no eligibility period due to the rapidly-changing nature of interactive media.
Ive done a major upgrade of an existing project that Ive entered in a previous competition. Can I re-enter it?
Yes, if the project is substantially different and has not appeared in the Interactive Annual before.
Can I get an extension on the deadline?
We will accept entries up to two weeks after the October 5, 2012 deadline date, but a late entry fee of $10 per entry is required. No entries can be accepted after October 19, 2012.
Do you offer a cash prize?
We do not offer a cash prize. Each winning entrant will receive a personalized Award of Excellence trophy, milled from solid aluminum, and award certificates for firms, individuals and clients. The winners are also featured in the Interactive Annual, distributed worldwide, and on commarts.com, assuring important exposure to the creators of this outstanding work.
Can I submit my work via e-mail and just include a credit card number with it?
No, we do not accept entries via e-mail. All entries must be registered using our online competition system.
How do I enter a website?
Simply include the URL. The website must be viewable in a common web browser and accessible via the Internet for three months after the competition deadline. If the entry is not publicly accessible, please include the user name and password to your secured server.
Where do I submit banner ads and online videos?
Banner ads, online videos and other forms of online advertising that have limited interactivity should be entered in the Advertising Competition.
My entry is an integrated campaign or branding program that includes interactive components. How do I get the whole campaign judged?
Integrated campaigns should be entered in the Advertising Competition. Integrated branding programs should be entered in the Design Competition.
My project is a downloadable application. Can I submit it as a web-based entry?
Only if it is a demonstration video viewable in a common web browser and accessible via the Internet for three months after the competition deadline. We are only able to support iOS, Android, OS X and Windows 7. Entries on all other platforms must be submitted as a demonstration video on disc or viewable on the web.
My project is a downloadable e-book for the Kindle Fire. Can I submit it as a web-based entry?

Can I send screen dumps alone?
No. Because this is an interactive competition it is important that the judges view your project in its interactive form. Entries must be either a stand-alone application or be viewable in a web browser. Entries that can not be presented this way should be submitted as a demonstration video. Stand-alone means no additional software will be needed other than what you have submitted.
I have separate applications that together make up my project, will they all be viewed?
The project must be viewable from one main application. If there are multiple applications on your disc, please note which one is to be used as the main interface.
Can I send compressed files?
We accept SIT and ZIP files sent on disc. We do not accept compressed files that we must download from a supplied web link.
Will my project be presented with stereo sound?
Yes. If your project takes advantage of CD-quality stereo sound, it will be presented to the judges with the appropriate hardware.
Where do we put creative credits?
Creative credits will be requested if your work is chosen for inclusion in the Annual.
Where can I provide a description for the project?
We dont allow project descriptions so the judges may evaluate projects without bias.
When will we know if our entry was chosen?
If your entry is chosen we will notify you three months after the deadline date. Because of the number of entries we receive, we can only notify entrants whose work is accepted.
