1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair exhibit

Environmental Graphics, Education

Designed by Bethesda, Maryland-based Gallagher & Associates, a leading designer of museums and interpretive centers, this permanent exhibit at the The Museum at Bethel Woods showcases the iconic 20th-century event and highlights the transformative era of the 1960s. The education-based experience involved a lengthy phase of research, including an analysis of historic events, a review of the artifacts and oral histories (including interviews with several of the artists who performed at the concert). Since many young visitors require information about what was happening politically, militarily and socially at the time, the exhibit also adresses the civil rights movement, the anti-war movement and the overall push for independence in society that drove many of these young people to come together for this incredible concert. Eventually, the museum will incorporate educational programs that encourage social responsibility and explore how many issues of the 1960s are relevant today, including ecological preservation, idealism and activism, diversity and the evolution of popular music.
