Beck music video

Hip hop, psychedelic pop and surrealism meld deliciously in the animated music video for Beck’s new single, “Wow.”

There’s a line in Beck’s new single, “Wow,” where Beck sings, “A girl in a bikini with a Lambourghini Shih Tzu.” But when graphic artist Jimmy Turrell (London), designer Bráulio Amado (Brooklyn) and animator Antonio Vicentini (Brazil) heard it, they thought Beck was saying, “ ... while a Lamborghini shits you.” This is just one of the many amusing hiccups the trio embraced in order to complete the animated music video for the singer’s highly anticipated single. Originally asked to pitch visuals for artwork, Turrell, Amado and Vicentini began working on the music video when Beck liked their ideas enough to say, “This has to be animated.” They had eight days. “Quite a crazy week! The sleep deprivation may have added to the surreal aspects of the video,” recounts Turrell.

Beck’s music served as muse to Turrell, Amado and Vicentini, who followed the song’s lead—the beginning of the video features an ultramodern style, which goes along with the song’s hip-hop/trap beats and morphs into psychedelic pop by the video’s end. Having to brainstorm visual ideas for each lyric very quickly, a strange juxtaposition often emerged between the lyrics and the imagery. “We got sent the audio file first—and then the lyric sheet a few days later. In that time, we misheard a lot of the lyrics. We just allowed happy accidents to happen,” says Turrell. And as for that constipated Lamborghini? “I’ll let viewers imagine what ideas we came up with for that!”
