Car & Driver portraits

Entertainment, Illustration

Darin Johnson, art director of Car & Driver magazine, commissioned a series of portraits to accompany the magazine’s “What I’d Do Differently” section, in which key figures in car racing talk about their lives. Illustrator Charles Williams chose to use a circle, a prominent shape in racing and automotive design, as the basis for each image. “For the first portrait, of Stirling Moss, I used a circular grid, emanating from Moss’s steering wheel,” Williams says. “For Peter Brock, I looked at his distinctive car designs and tried to bring some of their styling to the portrait. This project has been interesting to work on as I’ve tried to convey the history of each subject using an abstract approach.”
