The GRAMMY Museum exhibition design

Environmental Graphics, Entertainment

The GRAMMY Museum in downtown Los Angeles showcases the creative process, cultural impact and history of music with an array of multimedia exhibits and interactive experiences. Bicoastal design studio Gallagher & Associates, created the playful and emotional space that seamlessly blends media, graphics and architecture, yet keeps the visual focus on the information. Monolithic surfaces and textures graphically disguise the relatively small footprint and low ceiling heights throughout the museum, while also serving as a visual break from the abundance of information available within the graphic and interactive panels.

Several facets of music, from the history of American music, to the process of making it, to the celebration of it are represented thematically so that each theme maintains its own identity yet shares a visual vocabulary. The history of American music is celebrated architecturally, with a muted color palette and subtle textures; the process of making music utilizes bold technical colors and textures, derivative of music production studios; and, finally the GRAMMY Awards section blitzes visitor with bright colors, variations in lighting and large-scale media. Consistency of materials, typography, image treatment and textural application kept all of the galleries within one family.
