Better known for his whimsical drawings, San Francisco-based illustrator Ward Schumaker was recently asked by Hermés (Paris) to illustrate its spring/summer line of fashion accessories, objets Hermés, for a press packet to be sent to a prestigious group of fashion editors, along with an invitation to a special event announcing the line. Page after page of brushed-line drawings of gloves, hats, shoes, scarves and jewelry are reproduced on heavy paper folios, folded and tucked one inside another, unbound. The artist’s hand-painted calligraphy identifies each item. Schumaker had the luxury of drawing during the month of August—while everyone in France is on vacation—a generous lead-time for someone used to tight American deadlines.
