With innovative engineering, flawless manufacturing and superior customer service, Lionel has been synonymous with the model railroading industry since 1900. In the summer of 2008, New York-based EVB Creative was selected to update the company’s communications, with a focus on Lionel’s 2009 product catalog. Not only did the studio do the design and production work, but creative director Eric Van Den Brulle, also an award-winning photographer, took more than 100 new product shots for the catalog—uniquely capturing the mechanical and operational realism that make the trains so coveted. While past catalogs were cluttered and busy, with outdated graphics, this solution takes a structured and organized approach to delivering information—a classic typeface with origins in post-WWII industrial signage, and photography that captures the breathtaking authenticity and detailing of Lionel’s models. Up next are product videos for the Lionel Vision Line and Ready-to-Run trains, cover designs for the Lionelville children’s book series and new train car graphics.
