Muscle Car stamps

Illustration, Consumer

In this series of images, commissioned by the United States Postal Service, award-winning artist Tom Fritz captures the excitement and visceral attributes of the five most sought-after high-performance muscle cars from the late 1960s through the early 1970s. Although short-lived, this era was not only responsible for defining an entire generation in America, but also produced some of the most inventive advertising in the history of the automobile.

“My challenge was to capture and communicate the aggressive qualities of each car on a small scale,” said Fritz, whose technical precision translates well through the remarkably bold, energetic brushwork. Dramatic compositions combined with his cinematic sense of color and movement deliver stunningly powerful depictions.

“The response has been overwhelming,” reported Postal Service press officer Mark Saunders. “A USPS poll indicated that viewers considered the issuance among their favorites and post offices are experiencing difficulties keeping the series in stock.”
