Neenah Paper book

This book from Willoughby Design has tactile spreads featuring six contemporary type designers.

When Neenah Paper tasked Willoughby Design with creating something fresh and engaging to let designers explore its signature Neenah CLASSIC brands, from the textures of CLASSIC CREST® to the colors of CLASSIC COLUMNS®, the Kansas City–based design firm, in collaboration with writer Alyson Kuhn, came up with an interesting twist on classic typography: Fresh Takes on Classic Type on CLASSIC® Papers. The book focuses on contemporary typography designers to tell the story of digital typefaces and how they evoke classic analog printing technologies while freeing designers from the limitations of traditional typesetting.

Narrowing the field from 25 designers and typefaces to just six was a challenge. Ultimately, the legendary type designers Jessica Hische, Matthew Carter and Erik Spiekermann, along with the emerging creative talents Luke Lisi and Nicole and Petra Kaptiza, were selected.

Unified by interactivity, each designer’s spread has a tactile element: The spread featuring Hische’s typefaces Buttermilk and Brioche holds a useable coffee sleeve. Spiekermann’s HWT Artz typeface makes a great desk poster. Carter’s Big Caslon piece houses a piece of wrapping paper, and the dingbats on the last spread are perforated so you can easily use them to build an Eames-inspired card tower.

The result is a big, beautiful book featuring six interactive stories; a multitude of paper textures, colors and weights; and a variety of printing and production techniques. A sense of discovery and joy spreads throughout its pages, beckoning readers to explore.
