The Portland Museum of Art is currently (through December) home to a uniquely comprehensive exhibit of the works of American painter Winslow Homer. The exhibit, Weatherbeaten: Winslow Homer and Maine, is a collection of Homer’s work from all over the United States in a once in a lifetime retrospective. Homer, who made Maine his home later in life, is known for raw depictions of the sea and forest and of the life of quintessential Americans including sailors, soldiers and mothers. For the exhibit, which Fodors has highlighted as one of the top eight museum shows to see in 2012, the museum asked local branding and design studio Might & Main to produce a collection of products that would appeal to a broad range of exhibit visitors.
The branding, product design and packaging project provided an opportunity for the studio to be involved in communicating Maine’s part in art history and to help to put the museum on the national map. Might & Main first designed the identity and then teamed with local artisans, craftsmen, and makers of all kinds, to design and produce a full line of products that ranges from Black Point Mercantile’s map cases to an official Winslow Homer bobblehead. Available through the Portland Museum of Art store, the line is setting a new standard for well-designed, locally-sourced, and geographically-relevant museum store goods.
