Volume, Inc. retrospective at the Western Gallery

Exhibition Design, Education

When San Francisco design studio Volume, Inc. was tasked with creating a retrospective of its work for the "Masters of Design" series at the Western Gallery in Bellingham, Washington, the team focused on capturing the engaging and experiential essence of their creations. Volume's designers put together a collection—subtitled "Our Work Shouldn't Be Here"—that highlights their projects alongside conceptual elements that introduce Volume's process, philosophy and personality.

The scope and scale of Volume's work was represented physically by a giant banner displaying past projects that wove through the main gallery. A “Wailing (Poster) Wall” revealed inner thoughts, milestones, haiku, and outside comments about Volume's work, and visitors were encouraged to add to the exhibition by writing on stickers and posting them on a gallery wall. Volume interacted with exhibition visitors in real time through a projected Skype link with the studio, letting viewers observe the daily goings-on and even have a conversation with the staff.
