NPR for iPad

Launch Live Site

“An intelligently designed experience that is easy to use and provides access to content on the go.” —Micheal Potts

“This is one of those iPad apps where the brilliance is almost invisible, because they just did things the right way. The navigation is intuitive, the design is clean and not statement-making and it just works really well.”
—Keith Butters

Overview: This gesture-rich, visually-driven app showcases NPR’s award-winning audio and digital storytelling on the iPad. Story and program content is organized in gesture-driven card sets to encourage discovery and the audience is provided with intuitive methods for engaging with and book marking their favorite programs and local stations. An optimized primary nav bar emphasizes the integrated listening/reading experience that includes a full-screen Programs section with segment-by-segment browsing, playback and favoriting and a Stations drawer with predictive search and hundreds of streams and podcasts.

  • • This first in-house tablet update took four months to produce.
  • • The NPR website was modified concurrently to make it easier to browse on an iPad.
  • • Since launch there have been over 1.7 million downloads and a 50 percent increase in unique monthly visitors.

Comments by Jennifer Oh, Chris Koth and Max Pfennighaus

What was the most challenging aspect of the project? “NPR produces a dizzying array of content on a daily basis, across a variety of genres and formats. A big part of our design challenge involved creating a consistent framework that would capture the many ways we tell stories.”

Did you learn anything new during the process? “Previous tablet projects involved a combination of in-house talent, contractors and vendors working together asynchronously, making collaborative dialogue diffcult. With this project, having development, strategy, UX and design working daily around the same table was the key to our success.”
