webpick of the week

This site, created to accompany the William Kentridge exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, is a comprehensive retrospective of his work. It explores five primary themes in his art from the 1980s to the present. In addition to artist’s commentaries, the site showcases works and animations from the exhibition, offering a unique glimpse into Kentridge’s creative process.
In the exhibition, works by Kentridge are presented in a chronological progression that illuminates five main themes. The site visualizes each of these themes as a group of stars which collectively form a larger constellation. Visitors can navigate the constellation map, explore the artist's multidisciplinary works and see them in the context of their chronological and thematic relationships which combine the political with the poetic, and deal with subjects as sobering as apartheid and colonialism.
• The site was in production for two months and contains over 40 artworks, including 16 animated excerpts/films and 9 artist commentary videos.
• The initial component that’s downloaded contains only the most often used assets; larger assets are downloaded on-demand as visitors navigate the site.
• RenderMonkey Design of NYC collaborated with the museum’s curatorial, education, and digital media departments for the initial concept.
