webpick of the week
Art/Creative, Public Service
This project exists to bring people together around a ready supply of well-designed, wild postings that comment on current issues. The straightforward presentation is driven by a single idea: “As a global citizen, what moves you?”
The developers realized that most people have access to printers that are capable of printing 11"x17" greyscale documents, so they used the Web to take advantage of that. Correspondingly, they play the most prominent role in the design.
Since it’s intended solely as a vehicle for sharing issue-based posters that anyone can print and post, the beauty of this site is that nothing gets in the way of people viewing and downloading. Users can click on a poster thumbnail to see a larger version (utilizing Lokesh Dhakar’s Lightbox), or they can download the poster by clicking a link below each thumbnail. However, since not everyone is keen on hanging posters, the site is also the wall, a place to share ideas; it’s designed in a way that allows visitors to get something from it even if they never actually download, print or post a poster.
The 11x17, black-and-white posters in PDF format are for anyone, anywhere, to download, print and post but the real hope is that the site will get people talking about where we’ve been and where we’re headed in this historic election year.
• Two people. Jason Hardy and Justin Kemerling took about 2.5 months, working off-and-on, to design and program the site.
• The site's an extension of TheMatchFactory.com and is a mix of Flash, HTML, PHP and Javascript.
• Since launch, the site's received 50 poster submissions from 21 contributors.
