Museum, Public Service
The Freedom Museum is the first in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to the topic of freedom and the First Amendment. Its doors opened in April 2006. The site is a data-driven destination that extends the museum’s reach to a virtual audience. A great coupling of credible, relevant information and contemporary visual vocabularies, it’s an organized, streamlined Flash presentation that minimizes the visual clutter that hinders many museum sites.
• The site does a great job of relating historical and current events, but what it does exceptionally well is “explain” how First Amendment rights affect them personally.
• Large blocks of color identify each of the site’s main sections -- each with its own visual metaphor for staging and launching content.
• While the site map serves as a straightforward, text-based alternative to the primary nav, its real appeal is that it functions a lot like current exhibit listings that someone might see in a museum lobby.
