The Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) is an independent, avant-garde architecture school in downtown Los Angeles—with a Web site that embodies the vibrant atmosphere of the school.
So much more than what's typical of a .edu, the site’s a gallery-like presentation that consists of a 30-year historical archive, including full-length video lectures and exhibitions by world-renowned architects, designers and writers such as Norman Klein, John Maeda, Rudolph Schindler and Eric Owen Moss.
With a course structure for all degree programs, that provides not only descriptions but cross-linking to instructors and relevant work, it’s resource for students. And with news and event sections prominently placed on the front page it’s also useful for the bloggers, event sites, alumni and architects that actively link to the site.
• The Lectures Archive, dating back to 1974, currently contains about 100 videos.
• A navigation layer in the Work section is only there as needed so the focus is always on the work.
• Developed in PHP and MySQL, the front end utilizes Flash and HTML. Video content is presented in Flash but live streaming of lecture events, requires the Windows Media Player.
