Like the almost imperceptible adjustments designers make to the spaces between letterforms, the minutest tweaks in your life can make a huge difference. That’s the premise of Justin Ahrens’s Life Kerning: Creative Ways to Fine Tune Your Perspective on Career & Life. A stand-out in the design-your-life genre for its generosity, the book is divided into 29 “rules,” a word you shouldn’t be fooled by. This is not “Ahrens as Life Master,” scribbling your take-only-as-directed prescription for fast-acting self-actualization. (In fact, the last chapter is titled: “BTW, There Are No Rules.”) Life Kerning works like a conversation between you and Ahrens—about his life, your life and some stuff he’s learned along the way. That stuff represents a great deal of culled wisdom—unique ideas about finding what you love (and doing it), accepting difficult truths about yourself (Wait. I’m not perfect? And I don’t have to be?) and the apocryphal concept of work/life balance. If a book could give hugs, then Life Kerning would have you locked in one. Not in a creepy way. A reassuring way, as the book’s tagline has it: “You’re probably closer than you think.” —Tiffany Meyers
