Print Matters explores the world beyond mere digital printing. A new group of creative practitioners is exploring the bells and whistles of print, often to stunning effect. More than 110 recent projects are shown in the categories of “Branding & Identities,” “Books & Pages,” “Posters & Invitations,” and “Products & Packages,” featuring the use of foil stamping, die cut, thermal prints, technical folds and many other treatments once relegated to the back burner by environmental concern. Although the visuals offer an array of fun and often surprisingly creative approaches, the reproduction quality—perhaps because of the soft paper stock—renders some of the illustrations a bit fuzzy. More troubling is the writing quality. The foreword exhorts readers to use and even abuse the book, to draw from it every measure of creativity. This possibility would be enhanced if the captions were less esoteric—the writing is uneven and not edited for consistency, probably because of the international nature of the work. This does not take away from the inventive and clever use of such devices as a pop-up crepe paper dome on a poster invite or a 3-D topographic calendar for Land Rover. Fifteen printing and production techniques are deftly demonstrated by an international roster of contemporary designers. —Anne Telford
