Wang Shaoqiang’s Typography for Screen: Type in Motion is a compilation of work from the contemporary landscape of typographic design for motion and screens. Like earlier texts on the topic, Typography for Screen uses images to represent sequential still frames of original animations. Each project also comes with the accompaniment of QR codes, enabling readers to view it in its native form using their digital devices. This innovation expands the scope of the book beyond the limitations of the printed page. Wang builds on the work of previous authors while incorporating new terminology and ideas about technology, including multicolor, variable and animated fonts. The book is separated into three parts—Motion, Webpage and Experimental—and each section begins with a short interview of a designer, with the rest of the chapter spreads devoted to visual examples. Some exceptional ones include motion designer, illustrator and typographer Alex Frukta’s bold black-and-white works for Moscow-based agency Red Keds’ G8 festival in 2018, Los Angeles–based creative agency Buck’s energetic and colorful animations for its social media initiative Buck the Vote, and numerous experiments, such as those created for the open project 36 Days of Type. Readers who are looking for more context may be disappointed by the lack of written content, but Typography for Screen is packed cover to cover with innovative, dynamic and punchy expressions of typography and design in motion from around the globe. —Liz DeLuna
