If you have a degree in what field is it? Nada. I went to The School of Hard Knocks.

What was your strangest assignment? I specialize in animals, so it’s all a bit strange.

Which photographer would you like to meet? Sally Mann.

What famous person (living or dead) would you most like to photograph? William Randolph Hearst. I have a weird obsession with him.

Aside from your camera and lighting, what item could you not work without? Trader Joe’s snacks.

Is there anything you would not digitally retouch? Retouching isn’t a bad word to me, so I’d probably say no. When photographing animals, there are a lot of things to clean up (shedding hair, treats on the floor, poop) so it usually has to be done.

From where do your best ideas originate? I have no clue. Ideas pop into my head and I do my best to bring them to life.

How do you overcome a creative block? A good bike ride down to the beach.

Do you have creative pursuits other than photography? I shoot video and do a bit of design. I also love to bake.

What music are you listening to right now? Rush. Ben Folds. Regina Spektor. Loads of classical.

What’s your approach to balancing work and life? That's a tough one for me; I’m a bit of a workaholic. The iPhone has not helped (thanks a lot Steve) because now I can work from anywhere and I sleep with it under my pillow. Having said that, I make it a priority to shutdown all of my devices and spend time with the sun, the earth, the people I love and, of course, my dogs.

What’s your favorite quote? “I am not young enough to know everything.” —Oscar Wilde

Do you have any advice for people just entering the profession? Failure can be a good thing. Fall down and pick yourself up as many times as it takes.

What’s one thing you wish you knew when you started your career? I actually don’t wish I knew more back then. I’ve made so many great mistakes that have lead me to where I am today—and I know I’ll make more getting to tomorrow. I respect that process.
