Founded in 2002 and named for its address in San Francisco’s Mission District, 826 Valencia is a non-profit tutoring center. When the founders learned that the space was zoned for commercial use, they opened a pirate supply store to meet city regulations. Since then, the unconventional storefront has helped draw kids in to the free writing programs held in back. In a collaboration with San Francisco-based Office: Jason Schulte Design the nonprofit tutoring center/pirate supply store recently unveiled a new store identity and nearly 50 new products (eye patches, parrot food and planks sold by the foot). The storyline is a tongue-in-cheek take on what a 21st century store, that caters to 18th century pirates, might look like. All proceeds of the new products directly benefit 826 Valencia’s writing programs.
