When New York–based ad agency Blackrose teamed up with New York–based audio postproduction studio Sonic Union to create a new film for adidas Y-3, “The goal was to make it feel more story-driven than the average fashion film and to at least abstractly present what might lie beyond this whole catastrophe of unchecked surveillance,” says director Robert Broadhurst. “Y-3 designer Yohji Yamamoto’s famous quote about ‘clothing as armor’ really stuck with me, because at this point, total exposure feels inescapable. It’s a real siege we’re under, and that’s what the film’s alarms and cameras and big brother helicopter are all about. Plus, those elements helped motivate all the pretty close-ups of the clothes and the models running around. I liked thinking about the idea that, at least until it inevitably jumps on the data collection bandwagon, clothing may be one of the last places a person can actually find privacy. It’s weirdly obvious—but there it is. And thankfully, this stunning Y-3 collection is one of the options.”
Sonic Union mixer Brian Goodheart worked closely with Broadhurst to deepen the film’s textured soundtrack and amplify its sense of siege and suspense. “When I came in with fresh ears, I was able to really refine the sonic arc of the piece with Robert,” Goodheart notes. “We took a closer look and refocused the climax of the piece to an earlier moment, and the whole piece really came together.” Broadhurst agrees. “Brian crushed it. He solved a huge, lingering story challenge and brought it together perfectly.”
