One day, you see an eighteen-foot column next to the road in front of you, sleek and tall. As you drive past it, you notice that the yellow shape, which you thought resembled a B from far away, is actually an angular heart.
This is just one of the many new signs that the residents and visitors of Baltimore may soon see thanks to local studio Post Typography. Originally submitted as a proposal for a national competition to design Baltimore’s new welcome signage, Post Typography’s currently unbuilt graphic identity system will include everything from wayfinding to sculptural forms.
Inspired by Baltimore’s fierce local pride and friendly, unpretentious spirit, Post Typography proposed a series of new landmarks that pairs contemporary forms and materials with smart, engaging, flexible designs—roadside signs backlit with LEDs, benches that double as interactive sculptures and stainless steel columns laser cut with the names of Baltimore’s neighborhoods. Beyond greeting residents and travelers, together, these landmarks are designed as idiosyncratic monuments that reflect Baltimore’s personality with as much heart as the city itself has.
