Oregon Manifest invited design firm MINIMAL to represent Chicago in the 2014 Bike Design Challenge to design the ultimate urban utility bike, alongside teams from New York, Portland, San Francisco and Seattle. In addition to designing and building a working, road-tested prototype, members of Team CHI were responsible for documenting the process, leading up to the final bike reveal and public online voting. The most critical deliverable beyond the bike itself was the final video. The team created a short online film that not only highlighted the bike and its many innovative features, but also captured the essence of the city and its riders, all in under two minutes. With a humorous tone, the narrator outlines Chicago's unique obstacles, such as 42 million potholes and its two seasons of “summer and siberia,” as well as the bike’s features that overcome them. The MINIMAL Team worked closely with filmmaker Paul Detjen and writer Joe Bartolucci to create a compelling story that takes the viewer far beyond a bicycle competition and into the soul of Chicago and its determined, resilient people. The video captured the hearts of Chicagoans, as well as fans from all over the world.
