Highly respected and collected within the industry, Abstrakt beers—by Ellon, Scotland, brewery BrewDog—are released in small batches every year, limited to a few experimental brews known by their unique release codes. Asked by BrewDog to develop a new identity system and packaging style to help Abstrakt push the envelope on what we expect from beer, the Glasgow, Scotland–based design firm O Street blurred the distinction between art and beer. 

Inspired by Abstrakt’s flavor combinations and brewing process, O Street came to the decision to layer color over type for an abstract quality. The type itself is custom and features prominently through brand applications, with the stroked-out glyphs revealing the latest batch code edition.

Each bottle is embossed with the BrewDog mark. And to remind drinkers that Abstrakt is no ordinary beer, the tops of the bottles are dipped in colored wax, keeping the beer fresher longer. With each edition featuring a different color combination coinciding with Abstrakt’s flavors, and with Abstrakt’s motto, “More art than beer,” screen printed onto every packaging box, it’s no wonder that the response to Abstrakt has been very positive—it helps that the beer tastes amazing, too.
