Projection Artworks produced an innovative 4-D projection for British Airways’ inaugural A380 flight to Singapore. The one-minute film demonstrates intricate mapping and choreography that uses a number of elements, including dry ice and a 1:20 scale model of the plane. Video-mapping manipulates the look of a real-world object with animation. Usually, the effect is created from a specific viewing angle—where the audience or camera is standing—but to map the plane model, the team needed animations that work from five different camera angles. “In order to push the boundaries of video-mapping as a medium, we really forced the perspective in this piece, inspired by 3-D street artists such as Edgar Mueller and Kurt Wenner,” said Tom Burch of Projection Artworks. Seven HD projectors were used to cover the background and all sides of the aircraft, with a D3 media server to manipulate perspective and perceived depth. Dry ice created a “canvas above the clouds” effect.
