John Rushworth developed the identity and collateral for Café Royal, drawing from the establishment’s distinct history, as well as its contemporary renovation by architect David Chipperfield as a luxury five-star hotel and private members club. Café Royal is located on Regent Street, one of two royal streets in London, where every building is protected with at least Grade II status. The identity is guided by two oppositional attitudes: grandeur, representing the building’s history and location, and minimalism, representing Chipperfield’s architectural philosophy. Rushworth commissioned graphic artist Kam Tang to create a set of five illustrations based on exterior architectural elements from Regent Street. They are a modern take on classical engraving and use the same color palette as Chipperfield’s renovation.
