Out of a converted fire station in the laidback town of Virginia Beach, Commonwealth Brewing Company produces beers of incredible quality. The brewery is a rising star, serving the town through its onsite bar, distributing its beers along the East Coast and offering a core series of four beers bursting with flavors. So when Jeramy Biggie, the owner and brewer of Commonwealth, got in touch with Glasgow, Scotland–based design studio Thirst Craft, he had one simple request: “I want to be able to visually see the flavors that I taste in the can.”

To realize this request, Thirst put different oils, vinegars and inks on a plate and photographed their textured interactions at a macro level. By editing the images, Thirst was able to coax out the deepest, richest colors of each liquid—one can almost savor the freshness of a tropical India pale ale or the depth of a chocolate stout simply by drinking in the golden-green and fiery lava hues of the packaging. These evolving amalgamations of oil with vinegar or ink with oil have depth and intrigue, requiring as much exploration as the dynamic beers they represent.
