Background: Copperfield London Dry Gin is the first product from The Surrey Copper Distillery, a new distillery recently established by industry renowned professor Katherine Smart and her husband Dr. Chris Smart. Copperfield London Dry Gin is handcrafted in small batches in a bespoke copper pot using a blend of botanicals and based on a recipe taken from the first edition of The Complete Distiller by Ambrose Cooper that was published in 1757.
Reasoning: The idea of creating a book-inspired bottle came out of Katherine and Chris Smart’s backgrounds in academia and their passion for collecting vintage books. Naming the first volume “Copperfield” was not only a direct reference to Charles Dickens, but also to the copper still and the selected natural botanicals used in its creation.
Challenges: The full-size wrap-around label, the use of foil across the label, plus printing on the reverse of the label. Label Apeel worked closely with us and used a new technique to print the distilling notes on the reverse, along with careful use of foiling, to achieve the desired end result.
Favorite details: The intricate detail of the label design, together with the use of copper foil, will create real impact on shelf. The foil picks up on the colors around the bottle; it appears different in different lights, especially when placed alongside colorful cocktails. The notes on the inside of the label are a lovely discovery, and the bottle is also sealed with a copper stopper and a tamper proof “bookmark.”
Visual influences: We began the project by visiting the Charles Dickens Museum for inspiration. We also looked through Katherine and Chris’s collection of rare vintage books, which influenced the design of the illustration, the spine and the handwritten notes, with excerpts from Katherine’s own notebook during the gin’s development process, on the reverse. We wanted to create something that would sit comfortably on Katherine and Chris’s bookshelf.
Specific demands: By working closely with the clients, we have created the best possible solution. We have also collaborated with printers and illustrators; the final bottle is a fantastic reflection of everyone’s hard work, dedication and desire to create something unique and beautiful.
