CTRL, a weekly event at the live music venue Fibbers in York, England, approached design agency Superfried to redesign its identity and marketing collateral. Eschewing more conventional club photography for the marketing collateral, Superfried tapped the idea of control for an overarching aesthetic. “A controlling ‘big brother’ watching your every move led to the idea of using CCTV imagery,” says Superfried’s principal designer, Mark Richardson. “The venue takes an extensive selection of shots at each event, so it was logical to make use of this resource and style it accordingly.” As CTRL’s previous logotype used a stylized C that resembled a roadsign graphic, the design agency built upon this idea by utilizing a yellow and black color palette and double lines, with robust typefaces rounding out the copy. A proposed guerilla campaign for the event included branding condom wrappers. “The apt use of condoms included a humorous, positive message—birth CTRL,” says Richardson.
