Illustrator Graham Carter received a challenge from Dirtybird Records: make a series of images ambiguous enough to suit a range of musical styles. At the time, Carter didn’t know which artists the illustrations would be paired with. Serendipitously, the images matched up well with their corresponding musicians. Carter wanted the images to gel together as a set, yet have their own distinct flavors to represent the mix of sounds. He set about designing a central dominant character and thought of a world it could inhabit, and he imbued each design with its own color scheme. “It felt important to not make the narrative too specific, so viewers could make up their own interpretation of the story, aided by the music,” Carter writes. “All in all, a very fun project to be involved in.”
