An eight-piece band from Brooklyn, EMEFE recently released its debut self-titled album, utilizing experimental cut-up techniques that create patterns of sound with digital and analog processes. Reflecting this songwriting technique, design firm The Collected Works created artwork for EMEFE’s album that takes the concept of organic and digital manipulation to a visual medium. “The front and back of the vinyl sleeve was created by writing some code in the sketchbook software Processing,” says the Collected Works co-founder Justin Colt. “This allowed us to generate black-and-white patterns and typography—all inspired by natural growth patterns, such as those in coral reefs and tree branches.” The design firm extended this aesthetic idea to different elements of EMEFE’s merchandise as well, using Processing to generate aleatoric patterns for apparel, stickers and tour posters to promote the album.
