The Senior Library—now in its sixth year was established by Richard Wilde, chairperson of the Graphic Design and Advertising Department at School of Visual Arts—showcases the best work from graduating students and provides a long-standing faculty member with the opportunity to edit and design the annual publication. The guest editor/designer is given total creative freedom; the only requirement is that the book be seven inches by ten inches and packaged.
This year, SVA chose Richard Poulin, Poulin + Morris, SVA adjunct professor since 1992. Responsible for the development, design and implementation of this 440-page hardcover, bound volume, the team’s goal was to create a publication that celebrates student work through an intimate visual experience, allowing the reader to connect with the detail, quality, passion and commitment demonstrated by each student. It contains over one hundred selections encompassing a wide range of categories including advertising campaigns, book jackets, editorial, identity and branding programs, packaging, posters, publications, three-dimensional design, and typography. Held in an open-ended slipcase, wrapped in make-ready sheets from the book’s printing run, with a jacket that features the title die-cut from fluorescent green cover stock, exposing the book’s Smythe-sewn binding, “Exposed” transcends presenting student work to showcase the processes and materials used in book arts.
