As part of the agreement for guest-designing an issue of Futu Magazine, interdisciplinary design studio Frost Design (Sydney and London) was given sixteen pages for their own content. In the spirit of the issue’s theme, Frost chose to dedicate the eight spreads to various environmental groups, inviting a hand-picked selection to submit short creative briefs for a Frost-designed print ad. Frost’s concept for the issue, highlighting the importance of balancing commercial and environmental concerns, was ‘Walk the Line’; the issue uses recycled stock, water-based inks and a conscious effort to use less ink on the page (the typography, a signature of Frost Design, is set in key line type).
Taking a ‘less is more’ approach—less ink, less resources, less waste; bigger impact—the organizations with advertising in Futu 8 are:
• Amazon Conservation Association (shown), dedicated to the protection of the rain forest;
• Sharkwater (shown), campaigning to protect sharks;
• Barefoot College, a self-help organization for poor agricultural communities;
• BOS Australia (shown), a group dedicated to the survival of Borneo’s orangutans;
• Komstan, A UK restaurant, owned by chef Oliver Rowe, dedicated to bringing locally grown produce to London’s urban center;
• Africa Now (shown), a charity bringing business expertise and support to rural African families;
• Critical Mass, a grass roots movement to promote the bicycle and riding to work;
• Kakadu National Park, an Aboriginal owned World Heritage Site and sustainable tourism destination;
• EFTE Group, Ethical Consumption and Fair Trade, an organization dedicated to the promotion of fair trade, responsible business and the consideration of the consequences of consumer choice.
Frost is the first carbon-neutral creative agency in Australia.
