Anywhere between two through six percent of boys and five through twelve percent of girls identify or express their gender differently from the sex assigned to them at birth. But most children who question their gender identities are born into environments that are not prepared for this reality. They are often victims of physical, verbal and sexual harassment that can lead to rejection, isolation and depression. It is equally difficult for family and friends to understand the difference between that child’s gender identity and the sex assigned at birth. That’s what makes the creation of a child-friendly educational tool so important. To support the production of this toy, the nonprofit Gender Creative Kids Canada and Canadian ad agency lg2 kicked off the You Inside Project, which tells the story of Sam, a gender creative child and the inspiration for a Russian nesting doll that illustrates the different emotions felt by children who similarly question their gender identities. Sam comes to life in an animated film created by Québec artist Rodolphe Saint-Gelais.
