The new United States headquarters of pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, located in Philadelphia’s Navy Yard, are uniquely cutting-edge: the workspace is 100 percent mobile—no one has an assigned desk, not even the company president. Pentagram’s Michael Gericke worked closely with GSK and Francis Cauffman, the building’s interior architects, to develop a program of large-scale environmental graphics intended to foster a new, collaborative way of working. The design is inspired by the idea of connections, with dot-to-dot networks forming images that convey a sense of community and suggest interaction and creativity. Many of the graphic wall surfaces use magnetic dry-erase wall coverings, so teams can write and post on them during brainstorming sessions. Pentagram’s bold color choices coordinate with the overall palette for the interiors, including furniture and interior finishes. The new facility is a healthy and sustainable headquarters for a company with well-being as its focus.
