Responses by Sharon Werner, designer/art director, Werner Design Werks, inc.

Background: HiBAR is a startup with a big mission: to eliminate single use plastic packaging. And the startup started in
the shower with innovative salon–quality solid shampoo and conditioner bars. Goodbye plastic, hello beautiful.

wReasoning: Starting with the bar shape, we created a memorable, iconic shape that would become the hero of the brand. The droplet is easy to hold and speaks to the essence of the brand goals: water. The exterior packaging follows the taper of the droplet, keeping it secure in shipping and having shelf presence at retail. Minimum waste with high impact.

Challenges: Developing the bar shape. In hindsight, it seems simple. But we all explored many options. It was important that the bar was easy to hold and apply in the shower. And since it would be without it’s branded packaging, we wanted the shape to be iconic in the shower.

Favorite details: We are most proud of having participated in a small part of HiBAR’s big brand mission. Secondly is the packaging, which was designed to be as minimal as possible while still having a shelf presence at retail. The tapered box nests together, allowing for a reduced footprint on the case pack. The taper of the packaging and the inverted sides follow the droplet bar shape and protect it from dents or chips.

Visual influences: Water inspired everything.
