The founder of London cafe Iris & June has grandmothers named Iris and June, who passed on their passion for food and coffee to their granddaughter. This element of chance gave the cafe a memorable and warm-sounding name with real heritage sewn through it. The name is rich with memories and meaning, but design firm Proud Creative didn’t want this to lead the expression of the brand. The result is a stencil wordmark with elegance and simplicity. This is simplified further as I&J for social media and loyalty card stamps. Beyond the wordmark, the brand expression is deliberately loose. Driven by cost and practical considerations, the firm allowed the logo’s application to be low-fi at times. A spray-painted stencil on the pre-launch billboards and rubber stamps on paper bags and cups act as the visual equivalent of a barista not taking herself too seriously.
