If you’re not from Marietta, Georgia, then you might wonder: What is the Big Chicken? It’s a KFC restaurant, dubbed so because a 56-foot-tall steel sculpture resembling a chicken rises up from the building. To pay homage to the sculpture, which has been a local pop culture icon since 1963, and mark the culmination of the restaurant’s 2.2 million renovation, KFC’s creative agency, Wieden+Kennedy Portland, worked with Atlanta, Georgia–based production company Awesome Inc to bring the beloved steel chicken to life. In the animated short “Big Chicken Small Movie,” a young boy, who’s a bit of an outcast, finds a friend in the gigantic steel chicken, and they go on an adventure in north Georgia. From the beginning, the intention was to make the film as Atlanta-focused as possible. For both Awesome Inc and Wieden+Kennedy, whose creative team is from the Atlanta area, “Big Chicken Small Movie” was the perfect opportunity to honor the local monument in a charming, design-driven tale of friendship.
