The new documentary Kiss the Water is an homage to Megan Boyd, a Scottish woman famous for making exquisite hand-tied fishing flies. The film interweaves live-action cinematography and hand-painted animation created by artist Em Cooper and production studio Film Club. Kate Swan, producer of the live-action portions of the film, saw some of Cooper’s personal work, which showed her unique animation style applied to underwater scenes. Swan and live-action director Eric Steel knew immediately that Cooper was the right fit for the film.
Cooper worked with oil paint, and her animation sequences look like classical art in motion. Expressive brush strokes and a mix of muted and vibrant colors convey the film’s complex mood. After a screening at New York’s prestigious Tribeca Film Festival, even comedian Jerry Seinfeld was moved to trade his usual sarcasm for praise. “Kiss the Water is like dreaming,” Seinfeld said, “and eating dessert at the same time.”
