Background: The purpose of the project was to create the signage for L’Artesà, the main performing arts theater in the municipality of El Prat de Llobregat, Spain. Though it is a theater for all types of audiences with a lot of history, it was outdated and required updates and expansion at the architectural level that, in turn, respected the traditional and ancient elements of the place.
Reasoning: The name of this theater is L’Artesà, which means The Craftman, so our solution was to signal this in an artisanal way, through stencil typography, templates and paintings, as if the Craftman had always been there and was intimately integrated into the stone, brick and wooden walls.
Challenges: Painting the different surfaces, because there’s no room for margin of error. The client always prefers to be able to correct, replace signage at the last minute and to have a margin of error; however, our traditional solution does not allow for this. The solution used for this project forced us, in some way, to explore different ways and working times.
Favorite details: The integration achieved with the architecture and the irregularities of the paint on the different surfaces. Architects don’t like it when you dirty their spaces with letters and signs. So, in our signage projects, we always try to disturb the space as little as possible. In this case, the integration with the architecture was fine.
Visual influences: Old warehouses; parking structures; and industrial places.
