When London-based design firm Here Design was tasked with creating the identity for Little Italy, a new restaurant and pizzeria located in the heart of Amman, Jordan, it looked more than 1,000 miles away for inspiration—all the way to the towns and cities of Italy. What it found was rich heritage, both in Italy’s shop fronts and restaurants, and especially in the handwritten, beautifully crafted neon signs of its old gelaterias and salumerias. The resulting identity brings these touches of Italy to Jordan. Using imperfection as a deliberate design strategy, and playing with the authenticity of old signs, crests and icons, Here Design created a stylish egalitarian take on the classic Italian eatery. It has since charmed the design press and Little Italy’s patrons alike.
