Logo and main title sequence. "We wanted the Matchstick Men titles to feel like a martini—smooth, refined and satisfying," said director/designer Garson Yu. "The goal was to define a retro look while also achieving a comedic emotion. Our solution was to create a tailored typeface, which needed to stay simple, clean and elegant while still preserving a whimsical aesthetic.
Several different approaches were explored, but in the end we realized our original concept was most appropriate. Coming full circle was an important learning process, which also allowed our studio to get involved in the look of the entire marketing campaign. We were also able to create a new version of the Warner Bros. logo, which floats on sparkling water. The overall response has been tremendous! There has been a lot of demand for our new custom typeface."
