Norway-based design firm ANTI & Non-Format tackled 78 years of rich music history in its design of Lyd og ulydighet (Sound and Disobedience), the book chronicling the history of nyMusikk, a leading promoter of contemporary music in Norway, from its inception in 1938 to the present day.

Edited by Anne Hilde Neset, Eivind Buene and Audun Vinger, the book includes essays from leading music writers alongside photos, posters and other ephemera from nyMusikk’s extensive archive. The brief from nyMusikk’s artistic director Anne Hilde Neset was specific: “We want our book to have both a design edge and character enough to mirror the content; however, it also has to feel timeless and avoid looking trendy.”

In its attempts to promote avant-garde music over its 78-year lifespan, the organization has ruffled many feathers within Norway’s cultural elite. So once ANTI & Non-Format had established a strict grid and settled on one serif and one sans serif typeface, it made sure to include plenty of playful typographic and compositional aspects in the design to express this friction between the traditional and the radical.
