In 2014, Snøhetta was commissioned to design the visual identity and feasibility study for Oslo’s bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. The Nordic design firm created an Oslo 2022 identity with a visual language that honors the inherent simplicity and openness in Nordic culture. The bid was developed in three stages, each of which reflect a point in the process leading up to the application to the International Olympic Committee. First was a simple “logo-less” identity for a government funding application and a local referendum, followed by full development of the logo, typography and main identity, including art direction of aerial photography as well as interior architectural elements and signage. The final component was the design of the Candidature Acceptance document and all accompanying elements for the IOC submission in March. Oslo’s ambition as a host city is to share its genuine passion for winter sports and invite the world to an open, friendly and sustainable celebration of athletics. By balancing playful graphics and strict geometry, the identity represents both the celebratory nature of the Games and the solid planning of the Norwegian bid.
