Background: The purpose of the PF Armonia project was to reinterpret the elegance of the Didot legacy through a contemporary lens, creating a typeface that balances aesthetic refinement with modern functionality. We designed it as a versatile tool for creatives working across print and digital environments, particularly those in editorial design, luxury branding and fashion. The target audience includes designers who value typographic heritage but demand flexibility, readability and global script support for multilingual projects. PF Armonia speaks to professionals seeking both timeless style and technical precision.
Design thinking: Our approach centered on bridging tradition with modern sensibility, retaining the defining traits of classic Didone typefaces while addressing contemporary needs like readability, stylistic flexibility and script diversity. We focused on creating a variable font system that could adapt to different tonal needs, enabling expressive, elegant headlines and clear, legible body text alike. The idea was to offer a cohesive yet customizable typographic voice that could transition seamlessly across diverse contexts.
Challenges: Achieving a careful balance between maintaining the high contrast and vertical stress of a Didone typeface and ensuring legibility, especially at smaller sizes or on screen. It was also a technical and creative challenge to design cohesive alternate letterforms that would enhance rather than dilute the typeface’s core personality, offering range without fragmentation. Harmonizing Cyrillic, Greek and Latin scripts without compromise added another layer of complexity.
Visual influences: The foundation lies in the elegance and structural clarity of 18th-century Didone typography, particularly the works of Firmin Didot and Giambattista Bodoni. However, inspiration also came from fashion editorials, neoclassical architecture and the clean geometry of modernist design.
New lessons: Developing PF Armonia deepened our understanding of how traditional typographic aesthetics can be reinterpreted with today’s technology and design needs in mind. Working with variable font technology opened new ways of thinking about user customization and flexibility. Moreover, refining multilingual support across scripts reminded us of the nuances and the power of type as a cross-cultural design tool.
