Originally designed for toy company Trendon by Patrick Rylands in 1966, PlayPlax won The Duke of Edinburgh’s Prize (now the Prince Philip Designers Prize) for Elegant Design in 1970. London-based Webb & Webb Design Limited created a new identity and packaging for the game which was recently re-released by Portobello Games. Many artists, designers and architects, including sculptor Rachael Whiteread, acknowledge PlayPlax as a childhood inspiration; however, with its jewel like photography and fun copy the box intends to appeal not only to nostalgic adults but to children of all ages.
