Puffin Books—the children’s division of Penguin Group—teamed up with Brooklyn-based designer and illustrator Dana Tanamachi to create Puffin Chalk, a new, whimsical series of classic children’s books. Tanamachi Studio lovingly created the covers completely by hand on 40”x 55” chalkboards, which were then photographed for reproduction. The design was inspired by simple child-like virtues: playfulness, adventure, creativity and wonder. “We couldn’t have asked for a better response to these books,” says Tanamachi. “I think people are drawn to the classic titles, style and medium that have been reborn in a fun, fresh way.”
