Mark Gilbert of HELLO! directed these droll new spots for Sponge, Chicago client Sears Optical. Cast with accessible, believable, “real” people, and just enough distraction to make the spots believable, they portray mundane real-life as comedy. In “Dog Days” (shown), it’s easier to feel sorry for the dog, eating charcoal for dinner, than the somewhat clueless dad manning the grill. In “Raccoon,” the actress relates to the animal as she would a person, which ads to the absurdity of a wild animal walking into her house.
