Fast food restaurant SONIC Drive-In and ad agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners developed an Instagram-only campaign and menu item that proves life can imitate art. “People are obsessed with capturing the world on Instagram, so we thought ‘What if we manipulated the real world to fit Instagram?’” says Margaret Johnson, executive creative director and partner at Goodby Silverstein & Partners. As a meta-homage to the platform that launched food imagery into the mainstream, SONIC’s Square Shakes are served in square cups with square straws, perfect for photographing and sharing, and only availble to order through Instagram. SONIC collaborated with Instagram celebrity Chef Jacques La Merde, the online pseudonym for Christine Flynn, executive chef at Toronto-based IQ Food Co., who is well known for poking fun at fine dining by styling and photographing approachable foods in sophisticated ways. To create colorful backdrops for the food photography campaign, SONIC also recruited a select group of Instagram graphic designers, including Dschwen LLC, Timothy Goodman, Luke Choice, the Sprague Brothers, Will Bryant and Mikey Burton.
